In Nogent-le-Rotrou, France, an 80-year-old man was arrested after shooting at gendarmes. The Chartres prosecutor's office has launched two investigations, including one for attempted murder of officers on duty.

Nogent-le-Rotrou – 21.06.2026: In the small town of Nogent-le-Rotrou in the heart of the Perche region, an incident occurred last Friday that shocked the local community. An 80-year-old man was arrested after shooting at gendarmes. Fortunately, the officers were unharmed. The Chartres prosecutor’s office immediately opened two investigations, including one for attempted murder of officers on duty.

The incident took place late afternoon on Rue du Champ Bossu, a quiet residential street in Nogent-le-Rotrou. Residents reported a loud bang followed by siren-like sounds. “It was a shock. We immediately called the police,” said a neighbor who wished to remain anonymous. The gendarmes, who were carrying out a routine check, were met with gunfire from the man.

Investigators found that the 80-year-old, whose identity is not currently disclosed for tactical reasons, had no previous criminal record. Neighbors described him as considerate and helpful. “He was always friendly and helpful. It is hard to believe he did something like this,” said a longtime acquaintance.

The Chartres prosecutor’s office emphasized the seriousness of the incident and the necessity of strictly prosecuting such acts. “Attacks on officers on duty are unacceptable and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” a spokesperson for the authority stated. Investigations are ongoing to clarify the exact circumstances of the event.

In Nogent-le-Rotrou, a town with about 10,000 inhabitants, the community is closely connected. The incident has shaken many and raised questions about safety. “We are a small town; such things don’t happen here,” said another resident. Local authorities have assured that they will do everything possible to ensure citizens’ safety.

Investigations will continue to determine the background of the incident. The prosecutor’s office stressed that all relevant information is being gathered to conduct a fair and thorough inquiry.

Meanwhile, the gendarmes involved in the incident have continued their work and emphasize the importance of cooperation with the community. “We are here to protect and serve. Incidents like this only strengthen our commitment to citizens’ security,” said a spokesperson for the Gendarmerie.

The events in Nogent-le-Rotrou raise questions about safety and conflict management in small communities. Hopefully, the investigations will bring clarity and help strengthen the community’s trust in security forces.
