Automated Warning System for Identifying School Dropouts Announced
Education Minister Édouard Geffray has announced an automated system to detect school dropouts early, starting next school year.
Paris – 21.06.2026: Education Minister Édouard Geffray announced that from the upcoming school year, an automated warning system will be introduced to identify school dropouts early. This measure responds to the findings of an internal investigation that revealed possible failures in the case of a child who was kept for over a year in a van in the Alsace region. Geffray emphasized the urgency of preventing such cases in the future through preventive systems.
The automated warning system will continuously monitor student attendance in class. If a student is absent for an extended period, the system will automatically issue a warning, allowing the responsible educational institutions to intervene quickly and offer support. The goal is to ensure the safety and well-being of children and to counter potential risks at an early stage.
The decision to implement this technical solution followed the disclosure of a case involving a child who lived hidden in a van for more than a year. Investigations showed that there were significant deficiencies in the monitoring process that led to this dramatic situation. Minister Geffray stressed that such incidents must not happen again and that better monitoring and support for students are urgently needed.
The planned introduction of the system is welcomed by many educational institutions and teacher unions. They expect it to enable better detection of cases where students leave school or completely drop out of the education system. However, there are also concerns regarding data protection and system transparency. Geffray assured that all data protection regulations will be strictly observed and that the system serves exclusively to protect and promote the well-being of students.
The concrete design and implementation of the warning system will be carried out in collaboration with experts from the technology sector and schools. The system is set to be operational in schools at the start of the next academic year. Geffray called this a starting point for a series of measures aimed at improving student protection and preventing school dropouts.
This initiative demonstrates the government’s commitment to using modern technologies to identify vulnerable students early and provide targeted support. The public is also encouraged to be vigilant and to inform the relevant authorities if there is suspicion of school dropout or neglect, to ensure child welfare.
With the automated warning system, an important tool is being created to help protect children from neglect and facilitate their return to school. Through this, the Ministry of Education aims to ensure that no child is lost in the system and that timely assistance is provided.
