Bordeaux – 22.06.2026: On Monday, June 22, 2026, a new heat record of up to 43 degrees Celsius was measured in Bordeaux, posing significant challenges for the city. Such extreme temperatures are extremely rare in the region and have presented special trials for the residents.

The authorities immediately responded to the heatwave and issued a red weather warning for the Gironde region. This warning is valid from Tuesday, 0:00 until Wednesday, 0:00, and applies to the entire population regardless of their health condition. However, especially vulnerable are elderly people, persons with chronic illnesses or mental disorders, people who regularly take medication, and isolated individuals. Athletes and those who work outdoors are also warned against dehydration and heatstroke.

Symptoms of heatstroke include fever above 40°C, hot, red, and dry skin, headaches, nausea, drowsiness, intense thirst, confusion, seizures, and loss of consciousness. The population is urgently advised to drink water regularly, keep cool, and avoid physical activity during the hottest parts of the day. It is recommended not to go outside during the hottest hours of the day (11 a.m. to 9 p.m.). If outdoor exposure is unavoidable, lightweight clothing and a hat should be worn. Additionally, it is advised to spend two to three hours daily in air-conditioned or cool rooms.

Emergency shelters have been set up in the affected areas to provide protection for those without access to air-conditioned spaces. Mobile cooling stations have also been established to supply people with cool water. The city administration has furthermore set up an information portal where current notices and recommendations are provided.

Despite these measures, the situation remains tense. Health services are on heightened alert and have mobilized additional resources to respond quickly to possible heatstrokes and other heat-related health issues. Special attention is recommended for the elderly, children, and sick persons, offering them support if needed.

The current heatwave in Bordeaux is another example of the increasing extreme weather conditions observed worldwide in recent years. Experts warn of the long-term impacts of climate change and emphasize the need to take protective measures against extreme weather events at both individual and societal levels.

The residents of Bordeaux are called upon to take the authorities’ recommendations seriously and to protect themselves and others from the dangers of extreme heat. The situation is continuously monitored, and further information is regularly provided.
