Bram Focuses on Bicycle Friendliness: New Infrastructure Measures in the Aude
The municipality of Bram in the Aude department recently implemented several initiatives to promote bicycle traffic, including the expansion of bike paths, the establishment of bicycle parking facilities, and the installation of repair stations.
Bram – 22.06.2026: The southern French municipality of Bram in the Aude department has invested extensively in promoting bicycle traffic in recent years. The goal is to offer residents safe and comfortable alternatives to cars, thereby strengthening sustainable mobility in the region.
A central element of the strategy is the expansion of the bike path network. Existing bike paths have been extended and new routes created. Bike paths along Avenue Ernest Léotard, Avenue du Lauragais, and Avenue Paul Riquet now connect key points in the city such as the Pôle Santé, the Carrefour Market supermarket, and the Port-Canal. This connection now enables continuous and safe cycling throughout the entire city area.
Additionally, several streets in the city center have been converted into so-called “zones of encounter,” where the maximum speed is limited to 20 or 30 km/h. This increases safety for both pedestrians and cyclists equally and improves coexistence in traffic.
To further support cyclists, the city has installed repair stations in various locations. At these, minor repairs can be performed free of charge by the users themselves, which is a practical addition especially for commuters and leisure riders.
The topic of cycling training is also highly prioritized in Bram. At the entrance of the Complexe Sportif des Pyrénées, a 500-square-meter “Piste d’apprentissage du vélo” was created. This practice course is specially designed for children and allows them to learn bicycle handling and traffic rules in a safe environment. The course was developed in cooperation with the local police to prepare the younger generation particularly well for everyday road life.
In May 2026, Bram was one of five French cities participating in the nationwide event “Mai à Vélo.” This event includes a variety of activities such as bicycle markets, repair workshops, group bike rides, and an animation village in Parc des Essars. Participation in this event strengthens Bram’s position as a bicycle-friendly city and also aims to promote local tourism.
The measures noticeably contribute to a sustainable urban image and position Bram as a pioneer of environmentally friendly traffic and urban development in the Occitanie region. City administration and associations plan to further expand their commitment to bicycle traffic in order to make Bram even more attractive for residents and visitors.
Thus, with targeted infrastructure measures, Bram not only promotes the health and quality of life of its inhabitants but also makes an important contribution to environmental protection. The municipality thereby sets a sign for a modern and future-proof mobility culture.
