Paris – 22.06.2026: France is currently experiencing an exceptional heatwave, which poses considerable challenges especially for the construction and delivery industries. Temperatures of up to 42 °C have been recorded in some regions, significantly worsening working conditions for outdoor employees.
To counter these extreme conditions, many companies in the construction sector have adjusted their working hours. Breaks are being taken more frequently to give workers opportunities to cool down. Additionally, businesses increasingly use air conditioning units and provide refreshing beverages to protect the health of their employees.
Despite these measures, not all workers benefit equally from the protective precautions. This is particularly the case with smaller companies or subcontractors, where resources are limited, making implementation more difficult. Furthermore, there is often a lack of sufficient training and information regarding the risks of heat stress and appropriate protective measures.
The French authorities have responded by classifying several departments at the highest alert levels for heatwaves. Numerous schools and public institutions have been temporarily closed to protect the population from the extreme temperatures. Official recommendations for adjusting working hours as well as providing cooling facilities for employees have also been issued.
For the delivery industry, especially bicycle couriers, the heatwave presents a particular burden. The physical exertion at high temperatures greatly increases the risk of heat stress and dehydration. Companies react with additional breaks and shorter working hours. Nevertheless, it remains questionable whether these measures are sufficient to safeguard health in the long term.
Experts emphasize the urgency of comprehensive prevention and awareness efforts. Employers are urged to inform their employees about heat stress risks and consistently implement appropriate protective measures. These include the constant availability of sufficient drinking water, regular rest breaks, and the adjustment of working hours to cooler parts of the day.
The heatwave highlights the vulnerability of certain occupational groups to extreme weather conditions. Employers and employees must jointly develop solutions to make working conditions safer under such weather situations.
In addition to acute protective measures, many companies are investing long-term in innovative technical solutions. These include mobile shade on construction sites, cooling clothing for bicycle couriers, and digital monitoring systems that capture health strains in real time. The expansion of such measures is considered necessary to better cope with future heat events.
In conclusion, the current situation shows that awareness and flexibility are central to successfully meeting the challenges of high temperatures in the workplace. An adjustment of legal requirements for occupational safety under extreme weather conditions is seen by experts as the next important task.
