France Affected by New Heatwave: “Temperatures Will Drop and We Will No Longer Talk About It”

Paris – 22.06.2026: France is currently experiencing another heatwave, with temperatures reaching up to 40°C in some regions. These extreme conditions once again raise questions about the country’s ability to adapt to climate change. According to climate researcher François Gemenne, a member of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), climate change is a long-term phenomenon that should not be viewed merely as a temporary crisis.

Gemenne emphasizes that recurring heatwaves should not be seen as exceptional events, but rather as part of a structural problem. He criticizes that the topic of climate change is often only discussed during such extreme events, leading to inadequate measures. In his opinion, it is crucial to rethink the country’s adaptation strategies and develop long-term solutions.

A key point in Gemenne’s argument is the necessity to adapt the country’s infrastructure to the new climatic conditions. He points out the insufficient preparedness of schools and nursing homes for such heatwaves and calls for comprehensive renovation of buildings to make them more resilient to extreme temperatures.

Furthermore, Gemenne discusses the role of air conditioning in France. Although it is considered energy-intensive and environmentally harmful, he argues that the current situation requires a reassessment. He notes that French electricity production is largely decarbonized, so the use of air conditioning could be less problematic. Nevertheless, he stresses the need to optimize energy consumption and minimize environmental impacts.

The current heatwave has already led to numerous health emergencies and deaths. In some regions, emergency plans have been activated to protect particularly vulnerable groups. Despite these measures, the question remains whether France is sufficiently prepared for the increasing frequency and intensity of such extreme weather events.

Experts warn of the long-term impacts of climate change on French society and the economy. They call for a comprehensive strategy that includes both preventive and adaptive measures to strengthen the country’s resilience to future climate risks.

Overall, the current heatwave demonstrates the urgent need to revise and adjust France’s climate adaptation strategies to effectively meet the challenges of climate change.

The discussion about climate change and its impacts on France is not new. As early as May 2023, the program “C Ce Soir” addressed the need to finally take concrete action against the climate crisis. At that time, it was emphasized that it was time to move from fear to action and actively combat climate change.

The current situation underscores the urgency of translating such discussions into concrete political and societal measures to mitigate the impacts of climate change in France and minimize future risks.
