France Experiences Historic Heatwave with Record Temperatures
On June 22, 2026, France recorded nationwide peak temperatures exceeding typical June norms by up to 10 °C. Nantes reached 42.2 °C, Bordeaux 43 °C.
Paris – 23.06.2026: France is currently undergoing an extraordinary heatwave leading to record temperatures nationwide. On June 22, 2026, temperatures of 42.2 °C were recorded in Nantes, and even 43 °C in Bordeaux. These values are significantly above usual June norms, with some regions exceeding them by up to 10 °C, marking a historic peak of the heatwave.
The heat period began already on June 17 and has continued since then. Météo-France had warned of strong heating, especially in the southwest of the country, where temperatures of up to 43 °C were expected. In addition to the extreme daytime temperatures, nights in Bordeaux reached record values with an average of 25.3 °C, making recovery difficult for the population.
These exceptional temperatures bring significant health risks. In the days before June 22, 13 drowning deaths were already reported nationwide, an indirect effect of the heatwave that also led to increased use of swimming lakes and riverbanks. Particularly at risk are the elderly, young children, and people with pre-existing conditions. Authorities call for precautions such as adequate hydration, avoiding physical exertion in the heat, and seeking shaded or air-conditioned places.
The infrastructure also suffers under the heat. In the Paris region, about 10% of train services were canceled on June 22. The cause is stress on rail infrastructure and vehicles. These restrictions increase pressure on other modes of transport and complicate daily life for many commuters.
According to experts, climate change plays a decisive role in the frequency and intensity of such extreme weather events. Studies show that current temperatures are 2 to 4 °C higher than they would be without human influence on the climate. Ongoing global warming is expected to make such heatwaves more frequent and intense in the future.
France had already adopted a national climate change adaptation plan in 2025. Nevertheless, the country’s preparedness is criticized as insufficient, especially regarding extremely intense heat events like the current one. More comprehensive measures are needed to protect vulnerable groups, improve infrastructure, and raise public awareness.
Meteorologists expect continued high temperatures in the coming days. The population is urged to closely follow official warnings from Météo-France and adhere to recommended protective measures. This heatwave is a clear indication of the urgency to better prepare for the consequences of climate change.
