France Introduces AI Classes for All 10th Grade Students

Starting in the 2027/2028 school year, 10th grade students in France will receive one hour of instruction in Artificial Intelligence (AI) each week.

Paris – 23.06.2026: From the 2027/2028 school year onward, 10th grade students in France will receive one hour of instruction in Artificial Intelligence (AI) each week. This measure was announced by Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu and aims to equip students with the necessary skills to understand and responsibly use AI.

The AI lessons will be integrated into the existing course “Scientific and Technological Education.” Lecornu emphasized that it is crucial to provide students with the keys to understanding and mastering AI to prepare them for the challenges of the future.

This initiative follows the introduction of Pix IA, a mandatory AI learning program offered since January 2026 to students in 4th grade, 10th grade, and the first year of the CAP (Certificat d’Aptitude Professionnelle). Pix IA includes short, interactive modules that help students develop a solid understanding of AI and use it responsibly.

According to a survey, already 90% of 10th grade students have used AI tools for their homework. This high usage rate underscores the need to provide students with the skills required to use AI effectively and critically.

The introduction of AI instruction in 10th grade is part of a broader strategy to prepare students for the digital future and equip them with the skills they need in an increasingly technology-driven world. By integrating AI into the curriculum, students are expected not only to acquire technical skills but also to develop a critical awareness of the ethical and societal implications of AI.

This development aligns with international efforts to integrate AI competencies into education systems. For example, the University of Paris-Saclay has announced that starting in the 2025 school year, all students, regardless of their field of study, will receive systematic AI training to prepare them for the challenges of the digital future.

Through such educational initiatives, the goal is to produce a generation of students who not only possess the technical skills to use AI but also the critical thinking abilities to understand its impact on society and act responsibly.

The implementation of these measures is considered crucial by various educational stakeholders and technology experts for preparing students for the digital future. However, it remains to be seen how effectively these programs will be implemented in practice and what long-term effects they will have on education and society.
