Gérald Darmanin Calls for More Transparency in the Justice System After the Death of Elias

Following the tragic death of 14-year-old Elias in January 2025, Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin demands better explanations of judicial decisions and announces a new bill on victims' rights.

Paris – 23.06.2026: The death of 14-year-old Elias continues to spark intense debates in France about how the justice system handles crimes committed by minors. Elias was attacked and robbed with a machete by two teenagers in the 14th arrondissement in January 2025. He died the next day from his severe injuries. The incident shocked the public and brought the issue of criminal responsibility and the treatment of juvenile offenders into focus.

Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin emphasized on Tuesday at a press conference the need to create more transparency within the justice system. “The justice system must communicate its decisions more clearly so that citizens can understand why certain measures are taken,” he said. This is crucial to strengthen public trust in the legal system.

Darmanin announced a bill to be presented to Parliament next week, which will include articles specifically addressing the rights of victims. “We will work closely with the victims,” the minister explained. The goal is to ensure their voices are heard and that they better understand the procedures.

The public prosecutor’s office requested in May this year to bring the two suspects, who were then 17 and 18 years old, before the juvenile court. The young men were placed in detention. The case highlights the complexity of juvenile criminal law and the challenge of balancing society’s protection with providing chances for rehabilitation to the youths involved.

The announced reform aims to strike a balanced approach. “Sentences must be appropriate, while at the same time there must be opportunities to reintegrate the youths,” Darmanin added. The legislative initiative also seeks to improve communication between the justice system and the public and strengthen the rights of victims.

The broad public discussion about the Elias case reflects the question of how a transparent and understandable justice system can be designed to ensure both justice for victims and fair treatment of the accused. The government plans to regularly inform the public about the progress of reforms and the outcomes of ongoing investigations.

The death of Elias highlights the urgent need to increase transparency in the justice system and sustainably improve the relationship between justice, victims, and the public. As a result, France faces important decisions regarding juvenile criminal law and the handling of serious crimes committed by minors.
