Paris – 22.06.2026: Four French passengers of the cruise ship “MV Hondius” were able to leave the hospital after more than six weeks in isolation. The affected individuals had been placed under quarantine since early May following confirmation of a hantavirus case in another passenger on board the ship.

Hantavirus is a rare but potentially dangerous viral disease transmitted by rodents. Typical transmission routes include contact with rodent droppings or urine as well as inhalation of virus-containing dust particles. Illnesses can range from flu-like symptoms to severe lung diseases. Due to the potential severity of the disease, the health authority registered the incident on board the ship as reason for immediate quarantine of particularly exposed passengers.

The four French nationals, who themselves were not infected with the virus, were isolated in the hospital to prevent possible further spread at an early stage and to ensure careful medical monitoring. During isolation, regular tests were conducted that ruled out infection.

In parallel, a comprehensive disinfection of the ship was carried out along with contact tracing of all passengers and crew members. Further transport was temporarily suspended to prevent the virus from spreading to other travelers.

The health authorities in France emphasized that the hantavirus outbreak was an isolated case and not an epidemic. The swift isolation measure helped ensure that no further infections occurred. The four former isolated individuals are in excellent health and can now return home.

The cruise ship “MV Hondius” belongs to a fleet that regularly sails Arctic and North Atlantic routes, areas where rodents and thus potentially hantaviruses are present. The shipping company announced that it will review and, if necessary, expand its hygiene protocols to better prevent such cases in the future.

The case has once again highlighted the importance of strict hygiene and health controls on cruises. While Covid-19 has shaped the challenges in cruise tourism in recent years, it now becomes clear that other infectious risks exist that require rapid response. For affected passengers, long isolation is stressful both medically and psychologically, which is why encounters of this kind are treated with natural caution.

French authorities continue to rely on close cooperation with international health organizations and cruise companies to quickly contain outbreaks and ensure passenger safety. International travel regulations have also been tightened regarding rare infectious diseases to provide maximum prevention.
