Hénon, 22.06.2026: On Monday, June 22, 2026, temperatures over 35 degrees Celsius were recorded in the municipality of Hénon in Brittany. This exceptional heatwave prompted the mayor of the municipality, Jean-Michel Le Goff, to take immediate measures to protect his citizens from the extreme heat.

Le Goff organized the provision of free water dispensers at central locations in the municipality to prevent dehydration among residents. In addition, the opening hours of the community center were extended to provide citizens with an air-conditioned place. Particularly vulnerable groups, such as the elderly and children, were contacted directly and informed about the available protective measures.

The Prefecture of Côtes-d’Armor had already placed the entire department under the highest heatwave alert on June 21, 2026, as temperatures between 35 and 40 degrees Celsius were expected. In this situation, mayors are obliged to decide in cooperation with school administrations whether schools remain open or are closed. In the case of closure, care must be provided for the children.

Despite the high temperatures, the school in Hénon remained open. The mayor coordinated with teachers to ensure that students regularly drank water and were taught in air-conditioned rooms. Additional breaks were also taken so that the children could cool down.

The municipality of Hénon is not the only one affected by this heatwave. In recent years, such extreme weather conditions have increased in the region, indicating the impacts of climate change. Authorities advise the population to regularly drink water, avoid physical activities during the hottest hours of the day, and watch for signs of heatstroke.

Mayor Le Goff emphasized the importance of community in such crisis times. “It is crucial that we stand together as a community and support each other to endure these extreme weather conditions,” he said. “We must remain vigilant and ensure that no one is left alone during this difficult time.”

The measures in Hénon serve as an example for other municipalities in the region facing similar challenges. Cooperation between local authorities, schools, and the population is essential to minimize the impacts of such heatwaves and protect the health of citizens.

Given the increasing frequency and intensity of heatwaves, it is important that both authorities and citizens act proactively to protect themselves from the dangers of extreme temperatures.
