Heatwave in France: Students Report Extreme Living Conditions and Social Inequality

Amid the current heatwave in France, students report overheated living spaces on social media and exchange survival tips. These reports highlight the widespread housing shortage and inadequate living conditions faced by many students.

Paris – 22.06.2026: While France is being hit by an intense heatwave with temperatures reaching up to 40°C, students are reporting difficult living conditions that have gained wide attention on social media. They share tips on how to better survive in their overheated rooms despite the extreme temperatures. This situation exposes the precarious situation of many young people in the housing sector and underscores the social inequality that is further exacerbated by climate change.

A recent study by the Foundation for Disadvantaged Living Conditions clearly shows for the first time how widespread thermal inequality is in different residential neighborhoods. Particularly affected are student dormitories and social housing, which are often poorly insulated and have to manage without adequate protective measures such as shutters or air conditioning. These inadequate conditions result in high indoor temperatures that not only impair comfort but also pose health risks.

The current heatwave is already the second within a few weeks and, according to official figures, has already claimed seven lives. In several regions of France, the highest warning level has been issued, and authorities are urging the population to exercise caution. Nevertheless, it is becoming increasingly clear that preventive measures regarding housing quality and social protection are still insufficient.

Against this backdrop, the Foundation for Disadvantaged Living Conditions is calling for the accelerated energy renovation of apartments. Their legislative proposal “Zéro logement bouilloire” (Zero Kettle Housing) is supported by more than 150 deputies and aims to establish binding standards for protection against extreme heat events. Furthermore, they are pushing for a national equipment plan that by 2040 will provide all homes with modern sun protection systems and fans.

These initiatives aim to protect vulnerable population groups such as students better in the long term from the consequences of climate change and to mitigate socially unjust living conditions. They also highlight the growing importance of climate-resilient housing policy.

The current events demonstrate how the combination of increasingly frequent extreme weather events and often inadequate housing conditions significantly deteriorates the quality of life for many people. Therefore, comprehensive political measures are required to combat the housing shortage and implement sustainable adaptations to climate change. Schools, universities, and social organizations should also be involved to provide targeted assistance.

In the public debate, the issue of social inequality in the housing sector remains central. Highlighting the plight of numerous students during this heatwave makes clear how urgently socially equitable housing provision is needed. Only in this way can it be prevented that the burdens of the climate crisis remain unevenly distributed and certain population groups continue to be disadvantaged.
