Île-de-France Allocates One Million Euros for Schools to Protect Students and Staff from Heatwaves

The Île-de-France region has decided on special support of one million euros to equip schools with cooling devices to protect students and staff during extreme heat.

Paris – 21.06.2026: In view of the upcoming heatwave, the Île-de-France region has made an exceptional support of one million euros available to equip its schools with cooling devices and protect students and staff from the health consequences of extreme temperatures. With this measure, the region is responding specifically to the increasing challenges posed by climate change and aims to ensure a safe learning environment.

The funds are intended for the purchase and installation of cooling devices such as misting systems, fans, and other suitable equipment. These are to ensure comfortable indoor temperatures in schools, thus promoting the well-being and concentration ability of students, teachers, and other staff.

The decision to provide such immediate aid was made against the backdrop of expected periods of heat that can significantly increase the strain in educational institutions. The region places great importance on schools using the funds as quickly and effectively as possible to install the cooling devices in time and thus achieve the greatest possible benefit during heatwaves.

This initiative is part of a broader commitment by the Île-de-France region to strengthen the resilience of public institutions against extreme climatic conditions. Already in May 2026, the regional administration had introduced an 850-million-euro plan supporting municipalities in dealing with the energy crisis while simultaneously implementing measures to improve energy efficiency in public buildings.

In the past, the region has also responded to extreme weather situations: For example, in July 2024, a special heatwave plan was activated during the Olympic Games, which included free water distribution on public transport to minimize health risks.

The current measures reflect the regional administration’s consistent goal to proactively address the consequences of climate change and, among other things, protect vulnerable groups such as students as best as possible. Financing new cooling devices in schools contributes to climate-adapted infrastructure and supports educational institutions in continuing to operate even in extreme temperatures.

The region calls on all affected schools to make optimal use of the support and, if necessary, cooperate with regional authorities to ensure smooth implementation. The initiative is positively received by the public, as it offers practical protection against heat exposure and sends a clear signal for climate protection in the school environment.

In the future, the Île-de-France region intends to examine further measures to effectively counter the increasing number of heatwaves and secure the quality of life of residents. The provision of funds for cooling devices in schools is an important step on this path.
