Investigation Report Reveals Serious Deficiencies in the Lyhanna Case
A recent report by the inspection authorities reveals severe errors in handling a rape complaint against the main suspect in the murder case of 11-year-old Lyhanna.
Fleurance – 22.06.2026: A report by the inspection authorities exposes significant shortcomings in the handling of a rape complaint against the main suspect in the murder case of 11-year-old Lyhanna. According to the report, the forwarding of the complaint was delayed by several months, and there was a lack of adequate monitoring of the suspect. These oversights contributed to the suspect continuing to operate unchallenged, ultimately leading to Lyhanna’s death.
Lyhanna disappeared on May 29, 2026, in Fleurance, Département Gers. Five days later, her lifeless body was found in an abandoned agricultural silo near Puycasquier. Investigators quickly focused on Jérôme Barella, a 41-year-old man from Montestruc-sur-Gers, who had previously been subject to multiple complaints regarding sexual abuse of minors.
A rape complaint against Barella had already been filed in August 2025, but it was only forwarded to the relevant authorities in January 2026. Investigations only began in February 2026 after the victim’s mother reestablished contact with the authorities. The delayed response is cited in the report as a decisive factor in the failure to monitor the suspect.
The inspection authorities sharply criticized the lack of diligence and urgency in handling abuse complaints involving minors. They also highlighted poor coordination between the agencies involved, which further limited the effectiveness of the investigations.
In response, the government announced a comprehensive revision of procedures for handling complaints of sexual abuse of minors. The goal is to improve processes to better protect children and prevent such errors in the future. Simultaneously, internal investigations have been launched to clarify individual responsibilities.
The Lyhanna case has sparked a broad debate in France about the effectiveness and sensitivity of the judicial authorities. Calls for faster reactions and stricter controls are growing in order to strengthen the public’s trust in the legal system. The findings of the report serve as a basis for planned reforms.
Lyhanna’s family announced that they intend to take legal action against the responsible authorities. They lament the failure of the institutions that led to their daughter’s death and demand a thorough investigation of the errors as well as justice.
The investigations into this case are ongoing. Further details about the circumstances of Lyhanna’s death and the identified deficiencies are expected in the coming weeks. Both the public and the family hope for a thorough clarification and sustainable measures to prevent similar tragedies.
The case clearly illustrates the urgent need to improve procedures for handling complaints of sexual abuse of minors. Only through the consistent handling of such cases can trust in the judiciary be restored and the protection of children guaranteed.
