Paris – 23.06.2026: The murder of 11-year-old Lyhanna from Fleurance in the Gers department has caused shock not only in the region but also nationwide. On June 22, 2026, Grégory Bobbato, Mayor of Fleurance, held a discussion with President Emmanuel Macron at the Élysée Palace to address the tragic circumstances and the critical failures in the justice system.
Lyhanna disappeared on May 29, 2026, and was found dead a few days later, on June 4, in an agricultural silo near Fleurance. The main suspect, Jérôme Barella, 41 years old, was already under surveillance multiple times for suspicion of sexual abuse of minors, without any criminal consequences. This sparked a broad debate about deficiencies in law enforcement and child protection.
In his conversation with President Macron, Mayor Bobbato criticized the systemic errors and called for fundamental reform of the justice system. He demanded measures to prevent individuals with relevant criminal records from committing crimes unhindered. At the same time, he criticized the lack of coordination between the judiciary, police, and social services.
President Macron acknowledged the concerns and promised to intensify reform efforts. He specifically announced plans to improve cooperation among the involved authorities and to increase resources in the justice sector to ensure better protection for children and victims in the future.
In the wake of this tragic case, protests took place in more than 160 cities across France, with citizens drawing attention to repeated failures by the judicial and security authorities. Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin responded by ordering a comprehensive review of around 70,000 cases involving suspected child victims.
The Lyhanna affair has sparked a broad societal debate on the effectiveness and responsiveness of the French judicial system. Calls for swift and lasting reform are now supported by numerous politicians, institutions, and citizen initiatives. Mayor Bobbato emphasized that neither isolated legislative changes nor mere personnel shifts would be sufficient to restore public trust in the institutions. Instead, a profound, holistic review must take place, which also strengthens prevention and victim protection.
The meeting at the Élysée Palace marks an important step in the political discourse on child protection and the systematic reform of justice. The coming weeks will show which concrete measures the government will implement based on these demands, aiming to prevent future tragedies like Lyhanna’s and to sustainably enhance public safety.
