Marc Bloch and His Wife Simonne Interred in the Panthéon

Historian and resistance fighter Marc Bloch was interred on June 23, 2026, together with his wife Simonne in the Paris Panthéon.

Paris – 06/23/2026: Marc Bloch, an outstanding historian and resistance fighter of the 20th century, was posthumously inducted into the Panthéon on June 23, 2026. Alongside him, his wife Simonne Vidal was also honored. This tribute recognizes both Bloch’s scholarly life work and his courageous commitment in the resistance against National Socialism.

The decision to include Bloch in the Panthéon was announced already in November 2024 by French President Emmanuel Macron. Macron especially highlighted Bloch’s significant contributions to historical science, as well as his courage and willingness to sacrifice in the resistance.

Marc Bloch, born in 1886, is regarded as a co-founder of modern historiography and the renowned journal “Annales d’histoire économique et sociale.” Through works such as “La société féodale” and “L’étrange défaite,” he profoundly shaped the academic understanding of history. During World War II, Bloch actively engaged in the Résistance. In 1944, he was captured by the Gestapo and shortly thereafter executed.

The Bloch family initially reacted cautiously, expressing concerns that his legacy could be politically exploited. They demanded an exclusively civil tribute without religious or nationalistic exaggerations. These wishes were respected during the ceremony. For example, representatives of the far-right Rassemblement National did not participate.

In preparation for the ceremony, various events were held to honor Bloch’s life and work. On June 22 and 23, 2026, a “Veillée républicaine” was organized at the École normale supérieure, inviting citizens to collectively commemorate him.

On July 3, 2026, a reading of Bloch’s work “L’Étrange Défaite” will also take place in the Panthéon. This event offers visitors the opportunity to engage deeply with one of his key texts and better understand his thoughts.

The induction of Marc Bloch and his wife Simonne into the Panthéon represents a significant milestone in French commemorative culture. It not only honors Bloch’s scholarly legacy but also his unwavering dedication to freedom and republican values. The tribute serves as a reminder of the importance of rising against oppression and consciously preserving history.

The solemn ceremony was broadcast live on French television. This allowed people across the country to participate in this historic event, underscoring the national significance and appreciation of Bloch’s legacy.

With the inauguration of Marc Bloch and his wife Simonne in the Panthéon, France sends a clear signal of respect for the past while also issuing a warning to future generations to preserve and honor the lessons of history.
