Marc Bloch and His Wife Simonne Vidal Inducted into the Panthéon

On June 23, 2026, historian and resistance fighter Marc Bloch and his wife Simonne Vidal were ceremoniously inducted into the Panthéon. A documentary film highlights their extraordinary life and commitment.

Paris – 06/23/2026: Marc Bloch, a prominent 20th-century historian and hero of the Résistance, was today ceremoniously inducted into the Panthéon along with his wife Simonne Vidal. This honor recognizes both his intellectual legacy and his brave resistance against National Socialism.

Marc Bloch, born in 1886, was a pioneer of modern historiography and co-founder of the influential journal “Annales d’histoire économique et sociale.” His works, including “La société féodale” and “L’étrange défaite,” have had a lasting impact on the field of history.

During World War II, Bloch actively engaged in the resistance against the German occupation. In March 1944, he was arrested by the Vichy police and brutally tortured while in custody. Despite severe mistreatment, he did not betray any information. On June 16, 1944, he was executed by the Gestapo.

On the occasion of his induction into the Panthéon, a documentary titled “Marc Bloch, au nom de la France” was released. This film, written and directed by Hugues Nancy, sheds light on the extraordinary life and commitment of Marc Bloch and his wife Simonne Vidal. The film uses rich archival material, including photographs, diaries, and manuscripts, to tell the story of this remarkable couple.

Marc Bloch’s family initially expressed concerns about potential political instrumentalization of his legacy. They emphasized the importance of a purely civil recognition and wished for broad involvement of the academic community at the ceremony. These wishes were respected, and the event took place without participation from the far-right Rassemblement National.

The induction of Marc Bloch and Simonne Vidal into the Panthéon is a significant event that honors the values of the Republic and recalls the commitment to freedom and justice. It underscores the importance of remembering history and acknowledging those who fought for democracy.

For those interested, the exhibition “Marc Bloch, l’esprit de l’Histoire” will be on display at the Panthéon from June 25, 2026, to January 10, 2027. It offers an in-depth look into the life and work of this outstanding historian.

Today’s ceremony was led by President Emmanuel Macron, who highlighted Marc Bloch’s importance to French history and culture. He emphasized that Bloch is honored for his work, teaching, and courage.

The induction of Marc Bloch and Simonne Vidal into the Panthéon is a worthy symbol of recognition for their extraordinary life and contribution to French history. It reminds us of the importance of resistance against oppression and the defense of democratic values.
