Medical Emergencies Due to Heatwave in France: Dehydration and Circulatory Problems Increase

In France, sustained high temperatures are leading to a rise in medical emergencies such as dehydration and circulatory problems. The elderly and children are particularly at risk.

Paris – 24.06.2026: France is currently experiencing an intense heatwave with temperatures reaching up to 40 °C. These extreme conditions have caused a significant increase in medical emergencies. Especially affected are the elderly and children, who require medical assistance more frequently due to their increased vulnerability to heat stress.

According to the French Ministry of Health, there has been a rise in cases of dehydration and circulatory problems since the onset of the heatwave. These symptoms often result from insufficient fluid intake and the strain on the circulatory system caused by the high outdoor temperatures. Health authorities therefore urgently advise drinking water regularly, staying in cool rooms, and avoiding physical exertion during the hottest times of the day.

The current heatwave is the second of this year and affects large parts of the country. President Emmanuel Macron has called for caution and emphasized the importance of paying special attention to the elderly and vulnerable citizens. In addition, the highest heat warning levels have been issued in several regions of France to protect the population from the dangers of extreme temperatures.

In Paris, public parks and swimming pools have extended opening hours to provide citizens with cool places to retreat. Events such as the Fête de la Musique have also been adapted to counteract health risks posed by the heat. The city administration recommends citizens remain in air-conditioned rooms during the hottest hours of the day and avoid outdoor physical activities.

Health authorities stress that especially the elderly, children, and persons with pre-existing conditions are particularly at risk. They advise regularly checking the health status of relatives and neighbors and seeking medical help immediately at any signs of heat stress. Furthermore, it is recommended to reduce the consumption of alcohol and caffeine-containing beverages, as these can further burden the body.

Experts warn against underestimating the effects of the heatwave. They emphasize the importance of preventive measures and adapting lifestyles to extreme weather conditions. There is also a call for regular maintenance of air conditioning systems in public transport and buildings to avoid technical failures.

Finally, the population is urged to remain vigilant and take the recommended protective measures seriously to minimize health risks during the heatwave. Cooperation among everyone is essential to successfully manage the impacts of extreme temperatures.
