Paris – 22.06.2026: Heatwave with Temperatures up to 40°C – Residents and Tourists Seek Cooling Off

In Paris, temperatures of up to 40°C were recorded on Monday. Residents and tourists fled the extreme heat to air-conditioned places and the Canal Saint-Martin.

Paris – 22.06.2026: On Monday, temperatures in Paris reached up to 40°C, plunging the city into an extreme heatwave. Residents and tourists desperately sought ways to escape the oppressive heat. Many flocked to air-conditioned museums and shopping centers, while others visited the Canal Saint-Martin to cool off in the bathing area there. These measures were necessary as the high humidity further increased the perceived temperature and affected well-being.

The French weather agency Météo-France had already issued warnings ahead of this heatwave and announced an orange alert for extreme heat in several regions, including Paris. This warning was in effect from Thursday, June 17, and was extended through the weekend. Authorities recommended staying in air-conditioned spaces during the hottest hours, especially between 11 a.m. and 9 p.m., and avoiding outdoor physical activities. Additionally, it was advised to drink water regularly and avoid alcoholic beverages to prevent dehydration.

The heatwave has already led to tragic incidents. Two young children died after being trapped in a parked car, and several people drowned while trying to cool off in rivers. These events underscore the dangers associated with such extreme temperatures. Authorities emphasized the importance of precautions and called on the public to pay special attention to children, elderly people, and other vulnerable groups.

In response to the ongoing heat, over 1,350 schools have adjusted their opening hours or temporarily closed. Public health institutions are conducting campaigns to inform citizens about the risks of the heatwave and encourage them to take preventive measures. These actions are particularly important as the heatwave coincides with a deterioration in air quality due to ozone pollution, which poses problems especially for people with respiratory conditions.

The current heatwave is the second this month and follows a similar episode in early June. Experts warn that such extreme weather events could become more frequent and intense due to climate change. The French government is therefore under pressure to develop long-term adaptation strategies to protect the population from future heatwaves. These include investments in improving building insulation, creating more green spaces in urban areas, and promoting measures to reduce CO₂ emissions.

Given the continued high temperatures, it is recommended to follow local weather alerts and heed the advice of health authorities. It is important to take care of one’s own health and that of others, especially during such extreme weather conditions.
