Situation in Pyrénées-Orientales eases after wildfire – Hundreds of responders continue to secure the burn area

Pyrénées-Orientales – 09.07.2026: In the département Pyrénées-Orientales the situation after the large-scale wildfire in the Aspres has noticeably stabilized. The prefecture said on Wednesday, 8 July, that the fire front had shown a favorable development. The fire is not yet fully under control; isolated hotspots remain, and incident command warns of re-ignitions if the wind picks up again.

Progress was aided by weakened winds and slightly lower temperatures. Aerial support with water bombers and helicopters complemented the ground operation, in which several hundred firefighters held firebreaks, extinguished embers and secured sensitive areas such as forest edges near settlements. Armored vehicles helped reach difficult-to-access sections, while clearing teams secured charred trees that threaten traffic routes.

According to authorities, several thousand hectares of vegetation have burned since the outbreak on Saturday night; the Interior Ministry on Monday cited a corridor of around 4,600 to just under 5,000 hectares. Numerous residents had to leave their homes as a precaution. Parts of the affected communes have since been reopened, but some access roads remain controlled. A safety protocol applies to returns: buildings are inspected for heat damage, sparks in roof timbers and damaged power connections. Municipalities and aid organisations are providing temporary emergency shelters, drinking water, face masks and psychosocial support for those affected.

The prefecture is maintaining preventive measures. Open fires, fireworks and the burning of green waste are prohibited until at least mid-July. Hiking trails in the immediate fire zone remain partially closed to avoid hindering the work of emergency services. People in the surrounding area should follow official notices via prefecture channels and municipal alert systems and call 18 or 112 immediately if they see smoke.

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez had pledged additional resources; national units are supporting local brigades on coordination, including the central command and the training facility Entente Valabre. The gendarmerie and the public prosecutor’s office are investigating possible causes of the fire. No confirmed findings are available at present; investigators are securing traces at several suspected ignition points and recording witness statements.

Looking ahead to the coming days, incident commanders point to the still-tense baseline situation in southern France. After the long drought and low vegetation moisture, the risk of re-ignition remains elevated until rainfall moistens the ground and the edges of the burn areas. Residents and holidaymakers are asked to dispose of cigarette butts safely, not to use spark-producing devices near forests and to keep forest access routes clear for emergency vehicles.
