Montréal – 06/22/2026: On Monday morning, the quiet Côte-des-Neiges neighborhood in Montréal was shaken by gunfire. An armed man opened fire on police officers responding to an emergency call reporting a man shooting from a hotel window. The incident resulted in the deaths of 34-year-old police officer Mohamed Lamine Benredouan and a 68-year-old civilian. Another officer was seriously injured but is currently in stable condition. The suspected shooter was shot dead by police.
The incident took place near the Hilton hotel in the Côte-des-Neiges neighborhood. Police received an emergency call around 11:35 a.m. reporting a man shooting with a weapon from a hotel window. Upon arrival, officers were met with gunfire. The suspect, dressed in military clothing, was shot by responding forces.
After the incident, a large security perimeter was established, leading to the closure of the Décarie highway and the Saint Joseph’s Oratory. Initially, a second armed suspect was suspected but was later not found. Police asked residents to remain inside their homes until the situation was under control.
Investigations revealed that the shooter left behind a 100-page manifesto outlining his misogynistic views connected to the so-called “Incel” movement. This ideology unites men who believe they have been rejected by women and blame them for their misfortunes.
Québec Premier Christine Fréchette and Montréal Mayor Valérie Plante strongly condemned the incident and expressed condolences to the victims’ families. They emphasized the need to prevent such acts of violence and ensure community safety.
The independent police oversight agency BEI is conducting the investigation to clarify the precise circumstances of the incident. Police are asking the public to avoid speculation and await the findings.
This tragic event recalls previous Canada incidents connected to the “Incel” movement, including the 2018 Toronto attack and the 1989 Polytechnique massacre. Authorities stress the importance of prevention and combating extremist ideologies that can lead to violence.
The Côte-des-Neiges community is shaken by this incident. Residents share their experiences and the fear they felt during the event. Police continue their investigation to determine the exact background of the incident and to rule out further threats to the community.
