Slovenian pro cyclist Tadej Pogačar claimed the 89th Tour de Suisse with a commanding solo win on the final stage in Villars-sur-Ollon, securing the overall victory.
Villars-sur-Ollon – 21.06.2026: Tadej Pogačar clinched the 89th Tour de Suisse with an impressive solo victory on the final stage in Villars-sur-Ollon, securing the overall win. The Slovenian pro cyclist from UAE Team Emirates-XRG dominated the 144-kilometer route with 2,400 meters of elevation, further extending his lead in the general classification.
Right from the start of the race, Pogačar made a statement by winning the first stage with a 70-kilometer solo attack. He distanced his competitors significantly. In second place was Richard Carapaz (EFE), trailing by 2 minutes and 22 seconds, while Andrea Bagioli (Lidl-Trek) finished third for the day, 2 minutes and 39 seconds behind the winner.
On the second stage in Locarno, Romain Grégoire (Groupama-FDJ United) won a thrilling sprint against Pogačar. Nevertheless, Pogačar kept the yellow jersey and expanded his overall lead to 2 minutes and 50 seconds ahead of Carapaz.
Another highlight was the fourth stage, a 23.7-kilometer individual time trial in Aarburg. Pogačar won this time trial with a time of 26 minutes and 37 seconds, narrowly beating Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Premier Tech) by only 31 hundredths of a second to second place.
The concluding final stage took the riders over challenging mountain roads in Villars-sur-Ollon. Pogačar once again prevailed in an impressive solo ride, securing not only the stage victory but also his overall triumph with a clear margin.
The Tour de Suisse 2026 took place from June 17 to 21 and included five stages covering a total of 634.5 kilometers. The race was held in a shortened format to enhance interaction with fans through varied circuit courses and to assemble renowned riders ahead of the Tour de France.
Pogačar’s triumph in Switzerland marked his third major victory this season, after previously winning the Tour de Romandie. His strong form in preparation makes him the main favorite for the Tour de France, the most important stage race of the year, starting in two weeks.
In addition to his impressive individual performances, Pogačar once again demonstrated his versatility at the Tour de Suisse, from long solo attacks to time trials and mountain stages. His outstanding performance is seen as a clear challenge to his rivals, especially those in the Grand Tours camp.
With his current dominance, Pogačar is setting new standards and confirming his role as one of the best pro cyclists in the world. The coming weeks will reveal whether he can continue this success at the Tour de France and further solidify his status as a top favorite.
