UN Report: Over 700 Civilians Killed During Elections in Myanmar
The United Nations reports over 700 civilian deaths caused by the Myanmar army during the elections in December and January.
Yangon – 22.06.2026: The United Nations has released an alarming report documenting the ongoing violence in Myanmar. According to the report, over 700 civilians were killed by the Myanmar army during the elections held in December 2025 and January 2026. These figures are based on reports from human rights organizations and UN representatives.
The elections, organized by the military government, took place in only 263 of 330 townships and were mainly limited to urban areas under military control. Rural regions and conflict zones where the army was not present were excluded from the electoral process. This resulted in large segments of the population, especially internally displaced persons and ethnic minorities such as the Rohingya, being denied the right to vote.
During the election period, 408 airstrikes by the army were documented, killing at least 170 civilians. A particularly severe attack occurred on January 22 in the city of Bhamo in Kachin State, where up to 50 civilians lost their lives.
UN Human Rights Commissioner Volker Türk sharply criticized the elections, calling them a farce aimed at cementing military rule. He emphasized that the elections were neither free nor fair and served only to deceive the international community.
In addition to the airstrikes, numerous human rights violations were documented, including arbitrary arrests and torture of opposition members and critics of the military government. These measures exacerbate the already tense humanitarian situation in the country.
The international community faces the challenge of taking effective measures to hold those responsible for these crimes accountable and alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Myanmar. The United Nations and other international organizations have repeatedly called for increased efforts to support affected civilians and pave the way for a peaceful and democratic future for the country.
Despite ongoing violence and the difficult humanitarian situation, the people of Myanmar continue their resistance and strive for peace and democracy. The international community is urged to reinforce these efforts through support and pressure on the military government.
The United Nations has announced it will continue its efforts to enhance humanitarian aid and bring perpetrators of the crimes to justice. Furthermore, increased international cooperation is being sought to raise pressure on the military government and pave the way for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
The situation in Myanmar remains tense, and the international community faces the challenge of taking effective action to address the humanitarian crisis and lay the groundwork for a democratic future for the country.
