USA and Iran Begin Negotiations on Final Peace Agreement in Switzerland

After signing a preliminary peace agreement, the USA and Iran have started talks in Switzerland to achieve a final accord. However, the negotiations face challenges due to regional tensions.

Bern – 21.06.2026: After signing a preliminary peace agreement on June 14, 2026, the USA and Iran have initiated talks in Switzerland to reach a final agreement. The negotiations are led by US Vice President JD Vance and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. The goal is to define the conditions for a lasting end to the conflict.

The preliminary agreement, signed June 14, 2026, includes a 14-point plan that among other things foresees the lifting of sanctions and the release of frozen assets for Iran. In return, Iran commits to halt its military activities related to its nuclear program and to reopen the Strait of Hormuz for international shipping traffic.

Despite the preliminary agreement, tensions in the region persist. Israeli airstrikes on targets in Lebanon have escalated the security situation and could impact the negotiations. Israel has rejected the agreement, emphasizing that security concerns have not been adequately addressed.

In Tehran, the population shows a mix of skepticism and hope. Some Iranians welcome the prospect of an end to sanctions and economic recovery, while others fear the USA may not fulfill its commitments, based on previous experiences with unilateral withdrawals from agreements.

The negotiations in Switzerland face the challenge of harmonizing the differing interests of the involved parties. A central issue is future control over the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically important waterway for global oil trade. The USA has threatened to control access to the Strait of Hormuz and claim parts of the oil there if Iran does not lift its blockade.

The next 60 days will be crucial to establish the conditions for a final peace agreement. Both sides have set up technical working groups to monitor the implementation of the preliminary agreement and to overcome remaining differences. The international community is closely observing developments, as a successful conclusion of the negotiations could have far-reaching effects on regional stability and the global economy.

Despite progress, the situation remains fragile. Ongoing tensions in Lebanon and the geopolitical interests of the involved states could complicate the negotiations. It remains to be seen whether the parties can overcome their differences and achieve a lasting peace agreement.

The coming weeks will be decisive in determining the course of the negotiations and laying the foundation for a long-term peace solution.
