Wikipedia Bans Use of AI in Article Editing

London – 22.06.2026: Wikipedia has decided to ban the direct editing of articles by artificial intelligence (AI). This decision was announced by co-founder Jimmy Wales on June 22, 2026. Wales explained that AI systems are not sufficiently trustworthy to directly intervene in the article editing process. He referred to the problem of so-called “AI hallucinations,” where AI systems provide incorrect or fabricated information. Although newer AI models have reduced this problem, he still considers it a serious concern.

Despite this ban, Wikipedia acknowledges the usefulness of AI in certain areas. For example, AI agents could help alert the community of millions of volunteer editors to specific niche news that might otherwise be overlooked. However, Wales emphasized that direct editing by AI is not accepted because it is not trusted enough.

This decision aligns with earlier measures by Wikipedia aimed at ensuring the quality and reliability of content. As early as March 2026, the English version of Wikipedia nearly completely banned the use of AI-generated content, except for specific exceptions such as translating articles or basic revision of one’s own text.

Wikipedia stresses that the quality and reliability of content are top priorities. The decision to exclude AI from direct article editing is meant to ensure that the information on the platform continues to meet the high standards expected by users.

This measure reflects growing concerns within the digital community about the role of AI in content creation and editing. While AI technologies are advancing in many areas, the question of responsibility and quality control in the use of such technologies in sensitive fields like encyclopedias remains a key issue.

Wikipedia has previously taken steps to promote the responsible use of AI. In November 2025, the Wikimedia Foundation called on AI developers to use Wikipedia content responsibly, ensuring that contributions are properly attributed and accessed via the paid platform Wikimedia Enterprise.

These ongoing efforts underline Wikipedia’s commitment to remain a trusted and high-quality source of knowledge in the digital age.

Wikipedia’s decision to ban the direct editing of articles by AI is a significant step in the ongoing discussion about AI’s role in content creation and editing. It emphasizes the need to preserve human contribution and responsibility in ensuring the quality and reliability of information.
