On June 19, 2026, a large fire broke out in the municipality of Chézy near the RD 30 road, engulfing several dozen hectares of agricultural land and forest areas. A total of 70 firefighters and 30 vehicles were deployed, supported by a specialized command helicopter from the Sécurité civile. Due to the classification of the department under the orange alert level “high danger,” strict prohibitions were imposed, including bans on smoking in forests and driving prohibitions for motor vehicles off paved roads. Violations may result in fines of up to 1,500 euros.
Earlier in the week, fires occurred in the Montluçon basin: in Estivareilles, five hectares of vegetation burned on Thursday, while late that afternoon, ten hectares of stubble fields were aflame in Saint-Martinien, each requiring the deployment of around twenty firefighters.
The series of fires began on Monday, June 15, 2026, caused by agricultural machinery during harvesting on dried-out soils. An eyewitness reported an incident on Tuesday in which a tractor driver found himself amid flames several meters high and alerted rescue services.
In view of these devastating harvest fires, firefighters strongly recommend that farmers move harvesting activities to nighttime or early morning hours. Météo-France forecasts a further rise in temperatures at the beginning of summer on Sunday, with several regions in France potentially exceeding the 40-degree Celsius mark.
The prefecture has imposed strict prohibitions due to the department’s classification under the orange alert level “high danger,” including bans on smoking in forests and driving prohibitions for motor vehicles off paved roads. Fines of up to 1,500 euros may be imposed for violations.
